RPGaDay 2016 - Day 20

Source: http://www.brigadecon.org/rpgaday2016/

August 20 - What is the most challenging but rewarding system have you learned?

For me it was Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition. I don't play M&M much anymore, but that's more a reflection of my tastes and that of those I play with than a commentary on the game. M&M was challenging because it was my first stab at a d20 System based game after having played years of Palladium and White Wolf games, and it is a very crunchy and mechanically heavy game of building powers from effects and modifiers. In the end though it showed me that when you strip away all of the trappings and set dressing that a lot of things in RPGs really boil down to a small number of core mechanics and modifiers. This also exposed to me the fact that many systems can do a lot more than people may realize if you are simply willing to do some lite re-skinning to change the trappings.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 19

August 19 - What is the best way to learn a new game?

Play the game, twice, with different groups, and run it once. Different groups will help you catch rules that maybe the other group missed while both playing and running will expose you to different facets of the rules that you may not see entirely in playing or running. It probably does't hurt to have a good solid read through the rules and then do so a second time after some time has passed, but I know that can be a tall order for most folks given how busy we all are, but trying to get a number of different play experiences in, including running the game, is probably the best way to learn.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 18

August 18 - What innovation could RPG groups gain the most benefit from?

Transporters. We already have multi-vector video calling and VOIP, so when it comes to making gaming easier regardless of distance the next logical step is either some kind of VR (meh.) or transporter so that commute distance becomes irrelevant. Plus gaming at a real table with real people is always better than online and transporters would enable that.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 17

August 17 - What fictional character would best fit into your group?

Guh, I kinda hate this question, it just depends too much on the group and game.

If there were an ‘ice cream truck’ delivering RPG sessions, what ‘flavors’ would you like yours to carry?

This is better, something answerable anyway. I'll play a lot of different settings but I think I'd most like to be able to grab a pick up game of a superhero game. On the campaign side, something science fiction, either space opera or harder "real" sci-fi. I feel like I don't get many chances for either of those and so it'd be nice to order in for delivery.

August 16 - Historical person you'd like in your group? What game?

Umm ...

  • Nikolai Tesla in a steampunk super science game
  • Steve Jobs for a cyberpunk game
  • H.G. Wells for just about anything science fiction
  • oh, and ....
  • Gygax and Arneson for a game of Dungeon Crawl Classics

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 15

Source: http://www.brigadecon.org/rpgaday2016/

August 15 - Your best source of inspiration for RPGs?

Movies, TV, books, comics, DeviantArt, Google Image Search, other Role-players, video games. I don't know which one is "best" but at least for my blog DeviantArt is probably the most commonly used. I try not to rely on any one thing too much though as that tends to limit rather than expand.

RPGaDay 2016 - Day 14

Source: http://www.brigadecon.org/rpgaday2016/

August 14 - Who would be on your dream team of people you used to game with?

All of them. At once. Why should I pick? Discounting one-off games I game with friends; people I would more than willingly hang out and game with again. So yeah, any and all of them, and maybe all of them at once.
