August 13 - What makes a successful campaign?
Discounting "fun" as the only real "right answer" this one becomes a little perspective based. It'll depend on the game, game system, and the group. I think that in general however a good campaign can be managed by:
- Having connections between individual sessions. Not every session needs to connect to the campaign "story" but at least 50% ought to in my opinion
- Giving every character, including key NPCs, a moment to shine. PCs should have a real standout moment, where the spotlight is firmly on them, at least every few sessions.
- Play to an end, and end strong. You can always "renew for another season" with these characters if you want, but you shouldn't expect a 10 year long campaign during session #1.
