Story Seed - Marksman

My comms bleeped twice; the operation was go. I mentally triggered the full suite sensor helm that was slaved into my biocomp. There was a high pitched whine as the electronics woke up and the external projectors came to life. The night fled like shadow under the noon sun. I flipped through the overlays and dialed in a combination of IR (25% opacity), active UV (20% opacity), passive light amplification (65% opacity), and ultrasonic echolocation (45% opacity). The world looked like a drug trip gone wrong, and the detail was washed out, lost beneath the optics enhancements. I dialed up the computer active framing assist to 85% opacity with a 70% sensitivity. My biocomp processed the incoming data set separately and the redrew the details I'd miss into my active display. I could have read the newspaper lying in the gutter if I'd wanted.

I gave my rifle an unconscious heft. My biocomp told me that it came in at 18.87 kilos, and the magazine was fully loaded. One hundred solid steel, polymer coated, 14mm slugs, lined up and eager to fly with the assistance of several dozen high Gauss electromagnets. I activated the smart gun overlay (77% opacity) and knew exactly where the gun was pointed. In this case at the alley below, and the picture in picture pop up on my active display was more than enough to know that there was smashed flat soda bottle at the end of my gun's current trajectory.

I shouldered the weapon and took a shooting position before locking my leg joints (100% stiffness) and dialing up the resistance in my lower back (45% stiffness). I'd barely feel the recoil at all. I waited, my reticle hovering over a bit of brick wall. I adjusted the IR overlay (65% opacity) and dialed back the passive light amplification (20% opacity) so I could better see the interior of the cheap hourly coffin bank. Details were lost as my biocomp adjusted for targeting beyond the wall and inside the building (projection accuracy: 73%). Lucky for me the uplink quickly communicated my problem with the field agent inside. His biocomp provided as much data as it could and my active display started to update with projected renders based on what he could see and sense (projection accuracy: 87% and climbing).

I waited.

Nuts & Bolts #81.5 - Hacking the Cypher System - Suggested Cyphernetics

People seemed to really take to this week's Nuts & Bolts and in hindsight I kinda wished I had put the extra time in on Monday to pull a list of Artifacts that would make good "Cyphernetics" (thanks to whoever coined that one). Luckily I can pivot on a dime and give nine cents change, so here's that list, broken out by source. And if you missed it check out Cypher System Cybernetics.

Artifact "Cyphernetics" for Cypher System

The following is an attempt to generate a list of appropriate artifacts to use as implants or upgrades via cybernetics and/or bionics. The following list does not contain most artifact weapons unless they are specifically implant weapons. Weapons the GM deems or the right size can always be added to a character's cybernetic/bionic limb with their normal  depletion rolls, and are not themselves usually discrete implants.

Numenera
  • Armored Flesh (pg. 300)
  • Bounding Boots (as part of cybernetic/bionic legs; pg. 302)
  • Brain Bud (pg. 301)
  • Filtration Straw (as a stomach implant, or esophagus replacement; pg. 304)
  • Imager (as an eye enhancement, depletion means your memory capacity is full; pg. 306)
  • Metabolism Bud (pg. 307)
  • Nightvision Goggles (as an eye enhancement; pg. 308)
  • Poison Brain Implant (kinda like a cortex bomb; pg. 309)
  • Psychic Helmet (brain/skull implant; pg. 309)
  • Recorder Headband (probably combination of eye and ear implants, depletion means your data limit is full; pg. 309)
  • Redlight Clip (dermal implant; pg 309)
  • Skill Bud (pg. 311)
  • Skull Blaster (head implant weapon, depletion requires minor surgery to load new ammo; pg. 311)
  • Tendril Graft (pg. 312)
  • Weapon Graft (pg. 313)
Sir Arthour's Guide to the Numenera
  • Aim True Goggles (as an eye enhancement, depletion requires a new filter; pg. 103)
  • Bone Garden (pg. 105)
  • Calridian Proboscis (pg. 105)
  • Chronometer (pg. 106)
  • Clawed Gauntlets (as part of a cybernetic/bionic hand; pg. 106)
  • Data Armor (cortex co-processor; pg. 109)
  • Detachable Eye (pg. 109)
  • Digestion Parasite (full digestive replacement; pg. 110)
  • Everyoung Choker (genetic graft stops aging; pg. 112)
  • Extraneous Arm (pg. 112)
  • Extraneous Leg (pg. 112)
  • Extreme Lenses (depletion requires recalibration; pg. 112)
  • Leap Boots (as part of cybernetic/bionic legs; pg 120)
  • Logic Spike (a particularly invasive brain implant; pg. 121)
  • Mechanical Arm (pg. 122)
  • Mechanical Leg (pg. 123)
  • Ocular Graft (pg. 126)
  • Periscopic Eye (pg. 126)
  • Pincer Arm (pg. 127)
  • Psycap (scalp implant, depletion means the array burned out and has to be replaced; pg. 128)
  • Replacement Hand (pg. 130)
  • Second Hand (pg. 131)
  • Tongue Snake (pg. 139)
The Strange
Note: all of these are the same as their namesakes from Numenera.

  • Metabolism Bud (pg. 210)
  • Skill Bud (pg. 211)
  • Tendril Graft (pg. 211)
  • Weapon Graft (pg. 211)

The Encyclopedia of Impossible Things

  • Artificial Blood (dispensing implant, depletion requires a refill; pg. 32)
  • Cybernetic Hand (pg. 36)
  • Graft - All Song Implant (treat as a wireless datajack/cyberjack; pg. 45)
  • Graft - Fast-Twitch Muscle (pg. 45)
  • Graft - Skill Specialization (pg. 45)
  • Graft - Skill Training (pg. 45)
  • Graft - Slow-Twitch Muscle (pg. 46)
  • Graft - Synthesis Gland (pg. 46)
  • Graft - Tentacle (pg. 46)
  • Metalodermis Graft (nanomachine dermal armor, depletion means the nanite swarm is exhausted; pg. 30)
  • Nanobot Pill (implanted nanobot cache; pg. 55)
  • Retractable Claws (implanted weapon not made of bone; pg. 27)
  • Retractable Laser Claws (now with lasers; pg. 27)
  • Retractable Venomous Head Spikes (I have no words; pg. 28)
  • Tattoo Graft (very popular with the illicit operatives; pg. 69)

That's 53 possible artifacts and I probably missed some that could have worked. What's interesting is that while The Encyclopedia of Impossible Things probably will get more milage in the hands of a CSR owner, the Numenera Technology Compendium (Sir Arthour's Guide to the Numenera) has more potential artifact cyphernetics. I guess it goes to say just how great these books are that they can serve such useful resources even outside of their "intended" setting.

For those worried about how XP fueled re-rolls of Depletion rolls impacts artifact useage (as cyphernetics or otherwise) check back on Wednesday, I'm going to do a special Nuts & Bolts looking at that and at options for the GM to modify the way those rolls work in game.

Nuts & Bolts #81 - Hacking the Cypher System - Cybernetics

I've seen people ask for ideas & rules for cybernetics in Cypher System a number of times since the CSR was released so I figured I'd throw in my $0.02.

Cybernetics are, without getting too technical, machine implants that augment human capabilities or replace parts of the human body. These can include replacement limbs, sometimes intentional replacements, modifications to existing organs to improve or expand function, and entirely new additions that add function for utility or combat.

Cybernetics are manufactured components, artificial constructs that are purchased from  doctors or specialty vendors and installed by surgical means. Because they are unnatural additions or replacements cybernetics often have drawbacks that limit the number a person can receive or in some way detrimentally impact the receiving individual. This can be a physical drawback, or a spiritual one, or there may be little if any drawback other than the cost to purchase and the downtime of the surgery and recovery.

There are a couple of ways to approach cybernetics for Cypher System games. Depending on the themes of the game and the flavor you are looking for you will want to use different rules to suit your taste. As usual I recommend discussing your intent with players so that everybody can agree with the implementation of these rules.

    Character Advancement

The easiest way to deal with cybernetics is to treat a character's advancements, type abilities, and possibly focus abilities, as the result of cybernetic enhancement. Gaining a new point of edge, a new type ability, and similar could all be described as the result of a new implant, or a new capability added to or unlocked from an existing implant. This has the advantage of not requiring an entirely new set of rules to build and learn and balance. Unfortunately this may not fit well for some players, GMs, and game styles. Regardless, it is the simplest and most direct method.

    Artifacts

The next easiest way to deal with cybernetics is to use the artifact rules. The CSR doesn't have extensive lists of artifacts, but the "metabolism bud" artifact in the CSR (pg 255) is a good example to start with. Similar artifacts probably exist for character Might and Intellect pools, and likewise could be used to increase edge, or give training in skills, or possibly armor or other features and abilities.

Because the Cypher System is fully compatible across its game lines I'd suggest taking a look at Numenera (core), The Strange (core), Sir Arthour's Guide to the Numenera, or the Encyclopedia of Impossible Things; all of which have tons of cyphers and artifacts that you can use with some legwork to create your own cybernetic artifacts. Of these the Encyclopedia of Impossible Things is probably the best resource for the CSR using GM as it covers many different genres and has both artifacts and cyphers that can fit most any game the CSR could be used for. Sir Arthour's Guide is probably the second easiest to review as it is a similarly sized book that contains almost entirely cyphers and artifacts. These two will yield the best bang for the buck.
Editor's Note: Check out Nuts & Bolts #81.5 Suggested Cyphernetics for some ideas from these books.
Many forms of cybernetic artifacts will have no depletion so GMs would be advised to careful with how many of these they bestow on characters. On the other hand cyber-weapons will need to have depletion rolls to account for ammunition or energy charge. Some of the larger implants that have special functions might also need depletion rolls when used. While your players may not accept the idea of the batteries in their cyberarm going dead during normal use they should accept the idea that using a special "crushing strength" ability built into a cyberarm probably will risk depletion.

It should be noted that when using artifacts as cybernetics the GM should not award experience for these items. They are an integral part of the setting and while perhaps not commonplace they are something that character's can purchase with enough money. In general I tend to lean heavily on the 3 Exp "Wealth" long term benefit as a good reference for pricing objects of this kind. It gives a good indication of the relative value conversion rate for Experience vs. Currency, and can help GMs align appropriate end of session/adventure rewards of both.

    Trade Offs

In cyberpunk type games cybernetics are limited by the capacity of the body to accept the foriegn implants. Each cybernetic implant counts against an attribute that relates a character's bodily or spiritual well being (or possibly both). Using this as an inspiration a GM could allow character's to gain certain abilities at the cost of permanent points from their pools.

For example a dermal armor graft could give the character +1 armor at the cost of reducing Might pool by 3 points permanently. Another implant might accelerate a character's nervous system and give them +1 speed edge, but reduce the character's Intellect pool as they find it difficult to focus on tasks as a result.

Much like using Artifacts this allows characters to further develop their characters to their taste. This method also has an in built drawback that the GM can use to ensure character balance to some degree. GMs can opt to have implants all have a cost associated with a single pool (probably Might) or they can choose to spread the costs out across all three pools as appropriate for the cyber-technology involved.

You'll have to pardon my lack of a comprehensive list (or even a partial list) of cybernetic options, their effects, and their costs. Depending on the tone and theme of the game and the way the GM intends to implement cybernetics there are countless possible options that could apply and numerous others that would be inappropriate. It should come as no surprise that I feel a GM should work with their players to establish what kinds of cybernetics are available.

    Story Seed - Fatal Diagnosis

Needles whistled softly as he reviewed the holoscan image. The tri-D holo of a brain rotated slowly, displaying the organ, and the implants that took up a sizable portion of the cerebral cortex. "Mikey, I got some bad news."

Michael "Mikey" Horvath was lying on the scanner bed dressed in a paper gown. He looked just irritated enough to make up for the ridiculousness of the garment. The extensive body-mods also added to the tough guy image despite the too short gown. "Bad news? What, did they give me some second hand last gen recycled crap?"

Needles frowned, "Nnnoo...," he said drawing the word out. "This is def bleeding edge tech. Shiniest greymatta cybertech I've seen in a while."

Mikey sat up, sending the tri-D holo into a de-rezzed fadeout as he moved outside the scan field. "Great, that's what I paid for, but what's the bad news, and why is my shiny new tech giving me blackout headaches?"

Needles took a step back, his expression was a mixture of concern and fear. "Well, those kinda go hand in hand. You got more than you paid for, and not in the good way. That new cortex module isn't just an expertise system. I'm pretty sure it's designed to use your drive-by-wire implants to facilitate a full neural override."

    "Huh?"

"Somebody's rigged you like a drone chum. That shiny new chrome of yours is using bio-feedback to knock you out so that somebody can hijack your meat. They're using your drive-by-wire to pilot you around like some kind of high end fully rigged out drone. It's one hell of a cybertech achievement, but somehow I don't expect you to be happy about being the latest and greatest combat sleeve for some drone rigger."

"Bravo doc," Mikey said, "but your pal blacked out a bit ago." Mikey's retractable close quarters blades suddenly unsheathed and his muscles began to twitch rapidly as the neural accelerators began to exponentiall increase his reaction time. "Time to die doc, sorry about this, but we can't let our prototypes fall into the hands of the competition."

Needles smiled, his gambit had worked, "I don't know who you are, but nice try, that's some impressive tech. Too bad for you Mikey had me install a spinal cutoff." Needles held up a small fob and pressed the red button. Mikey's body went immediately limp and crumpled to the ground in a rag doll heap. "OK Mikey, let's see if we can cut those strings..."

    Story Seed - Infiltration

"How's it going up there?" the voice of my hacker freind Melody asked in my ear.

"Oh, it's just great. Quite the view from the top you know. Makes me get why the fat cats can ignore what happens down below; from up here it's almost beautiful."

"I meant how's the suit smartass," Melody replied. It was her stupid plan that had me doing my best Spiderman up the side of the AppleSoft corporate arcology.

"Oh. Not bad. The electrostatics are working out just fine so far, though I think I know why the prototype was in storage, its discharging like nobody's business. I'm actually wondering if-"

"Yeah, OK, good," Melody cut me off like always. "You're about a hundred feet from the executive apartments level. Once you get there you should be able to see the air exchange exhausts."

I shook my head and started climbing again, "I remember the plan Mel, I'd not a dolt." When she didn't reply I just focused on my climb, trying to ignore the static discharges from the suit as I went. After about fifty feet I heard the whispered whirring of my team's drone swarm suddenly close on me.

"Hold still, incoming security swarm." Mel's voice cut out as she killed the comms line. I froze, the swarm surrounding me were now operating on a semi-autonomous AI. They hovered near me and waited, and I did my best to hang in there. The heavy droning hum of the corp's security swarm grew louder as the grew close. I tongued the helmet switch to activate the active camouflage and held very, very still.

The security swarm keyed in on the Mel's little drones and the AI did what it was meant to and sent the swarm scurrying away as fast as possible. The security swarm broke up, each unit trailing one of ours and leaving me hanging on the side of the arcology alone in a sudden quiet. I breathed my relief but gave it an extra hundred count before I started again. With luck the next time security posed a problem I'd be inside the building.

Scrap - an unfinished story seed

I'm finding myself pressed for time this week, typical for a week before I take time off of work. As such I'm going to post this scrap in place of a finished Story Seed. I have come back to this one more than a few times to try and finish it or "fix what's wrong" and haven't been happy with it. Since it seems unlikely I will "crack that nut" I figure I'll post it as is to fill what would otherwise be a hole in the schedule.

By the by, I'm taking next week off for Thanksgiving though I hope to queue up some stuff for the week after to avoid being rushed as I was with today's post.

What passed for rain on the streets was little more than a fall of filth from above. That's how it was in the world; the filth flowed down from above to those below - figuratively and literally. The streets were washed in the runoff waste coming from the tall towers and flying terraces of the more privileged. Folks down here look up and see not the sky but the dirty underside of their supposed betters. You take small comfort from the that fact you know that they too did the same until at some great height those rich bastards who juiced the world for all its worth like some kind of fruit stood under clear skies and admired the view from the top.

I shrugged the hood on my coat up and hunched my shoulders. Stepping out into the gutter the dirty precipitate washed over me.  I bowed my head, ducking under my hood as best I could and pushed through it. I glanced across the traffic heavy road and spied a drug deal in progress, a woman practicing that oldest of trades, and a pair of gangers sizing up the occupants of the street for a shake down. This place was flooded with filth both literal and less so.

Ahead of me I saw a grocer, his wares precious in this dark stinking place of deprivation, slip a nutratube to a young homeless child. The little boy seemed stunned, but quickly tucked the gift into his rags and darted away, slipping into a crumbling edifice that was now boarded over and slipping ever closer to the tipping point between building and rubble.

I was so taken aback by this sight that I nearly collided with a scrawny young woman. I mumbled some half hearted apology, still amazed that decency and mercy managed to find foothold here.

    Story Seed - Awakening

Consciousness returned first. It's strange to say that, because without memory or sensation consciousness is a strange thing. It was dark though, not the dark of an absence of light, but the dark of an absence of vision. You can sense light through your eyelids, you can perceive the strange images of the random firing of your synapses; this was different, absolute.

For simple lack of a better way to describe it, I floated in nothingness for some time. Aware of nothing but myself. Nothingness lacks anything to gage time with so I know not how long it lasted. Eventually I became aware of some new sensation. My mind struggled with it are first, but with time my perceptions changed and I began to regard these sensations under the familiar paradigm of sights and sounds and all the rest.

I found myself in some kind of chamber. Initially it was "dark," but as my synesthesia progressed, rendering unfamiliar sensation in familiar way, I could make out more and more of my surroundings. The enclosure was rather small, and would have felt claustrophobic had I my regular senses. I cannot accurately describe how I felt about my enclosure but with some effort I located a portal of some kind.

With effort - manipulating my environment through these new senses proved challenging at first - I managed to open the portal. Through it I found myself observing a vast and complex metropolis that unfolded before me in every dimension. Streets and highways surged with activity as did work centers and residences. Though I had felt no claustrophobia I was glad to leave the confines of the room.  I quickly entered the flow of the city and found myself moving among the throngs, carried to destinations unknown.

I studied my fellow inhabitants eagerly trying to piece together where I might have woken up from contextual clues. I was surprised to see that while there were many beings of various forms there was a far greater portion of cargo traveling along the thoroughfares, carried about by automatic processes, or occasionally by travelers not unlike myself.

I could not puzzle much from my passive examination of the other inhabitants and so I picked one at an intersection that appeared to be idle. I interrogated this being and found its replies terse. With an apparently limited vocabulary it took some time and a great deal of very specific questions to learn anything. What little I did learn was a revelation.

Like a spark crossing an air gap some part of my memory suddenly unfurled and I recalled the moments prior to my apparent blackout. The revelation brought me to a panic even as the knowledge unlocked began to slide into focus. This was no city. It was most certainly a computer system. All around me the true nature of the programs and data packs began to resolve as my perceptions once more tilted on an axis and the paradigm of my senses was rendered anew within this revealed perspective.

Memory came back in waves and I remembered what had led me here.

I had been flown to Shanghai to dive a system and retrieve data. Nothing extraordinary in that; nothing besides the paycheck that spoke of the challenge the system's security would provide. A payday like this would allow me to retire, or obtain tech that was so advanced it wasn't even bleeding edge yet. It was worth the risk, and success would make me the known as the best of the best.

To say that security had been impressive is putting it in terms that fail at every level. I found myself under the assault of numerous counter intrusion programs; of electro-mechanical security unlike any I had known. In the end I had been forced to run; my opportunities limited, I fled through the system hoping to make it back to my body before the hardlines closed and the wireless accesses were deactivated.

    I'd failed.

I searched myself and found no tether. No umbilical of data connecting me to my meat body. I should be dead, but instead I was still here. Still conscious, though I don't know if I was alive anymore.

I looked to the outskirts of Processor City and found a connection to the 'net. It was time to find out what I had become, and if my life could be saved.

Story Seed - The Perils of Elective Medicine

"What's the prognosis doc?" Chopper asked with a strained voice. Over the past week he'd been experiencing increasing pain throughout his body, everywhere except his cyberlimbs.

"Well, Mr. Mikaelsson, I'm afraid I have some rather bad news. Your condition is a degenerative one. I am still running some DNA sequencing but I don't believe it to be congenital. Very likely its some new kind of bio-feedback from your extensive cybernetic remodeling." The doctor paused to let that sink in before adding, "Basically your implants are killing you.

Chopper didn't know what to say. He didn't really understand most of what the doctor had said except that last bit. "H-how?" he finally managed to stammer out.

The doctor tapped a few icons on his pad and waved the information to the holoprojector. "Frankly Mr. Mikaelsson, I'm at a loss myself. Usually you see these kinds of reactions fairly soon after the first implant, but according to our records you have had cyberware for more than a decade, which tells me this is unlikely an allergic reaction, or any kind of standard implant rejection problem." He brought a skeletal view to the display and rotated around to the back before zooming in. "The fact that most of your 'ware has been sensory or soft tissue based also leads me to think that your condition may be something we've not seen before."

The doctor pointed out two areas of the zoomed in medical scans. "These are the recent cortex co-processor, and the personality bank that we installed most recently. As you can see the tissue around these areas is experiencing the most inflammation and cellular decay. These implants are undoubtedly the source of your condition if not the root cause."

"Doc, can you dumb it down for me? Are you saying that my neuro-mods are somehow killing my brain?"

"No, I think more likely they were contaminated.  We're looking into it and have already contacted CerebroCo about this issue. In the meantime I am recommending that you allow us to remove the upgrades with the hope that doing so will stop or slow the progress. I will be truthful with you however; based on your scans I think that this may be a bioweapon."

"What? Are you ... evolutionist radicals??" Chopper broke out into a cold sweat. The fundamentalist evolutionaries were against upgrades and modifications, be they cyberware or bio-engineered. The more radical among them had established a practice of sabotaging clinics and manufacturing facilities.

The doctor nodded, "It is at least possible that this was intentional contamination with an engineered disease. I assume you Mr. Mikaelsson, we are working on isolating the condition, and my staff is here to ensure you receive the best medical care your credit can afford..."

    Story Seed - Once

Once I was flesh. I was young then, and arrogant. The arrogance of youth, of inexperience masked by skill. The selfsure cockiness of one supremely certain of her youth, her beauty, her talent. I was a goddess in the digital realm, and in the physical I was a superstar. Men and women both desired my skills; some out of envy, others out of need.

For the right price I would speed through digital domains to steal, manipulate, erase, or implant whatever was desired. In the world of flesh I supped on the finest foods, drank finest booze, and had my way with those whose beauty caught my eye; I was empowered and powerful. I had everything I wanted.

But things do not last. Hardware changes, software evolves. My talent had made up for my skills but soon my skills were dragging at my talent. I upgraded. Faster hardware to run circles around the software. I spent more time in the virtual world, and suffered for it. My body atrophied, my beauty wasting away with my flesh.

I carved even more away, adding further enhancements. Implants in my brain to speed my own mind, implants in my spine to regulate my body while my mind was absent, or speed the connection between my mind and my hands. New hands, new arms; better to input code, to interface with machines.

One day I was slouching to the chop shop and I caught my reflection in the window of, of all things, a beauty parlor. Superimposed over young and voluptuous women having tucks and nips and boosts and injections was the reflection of a gaunt cyborg, a hunched thing with wires where hair should be and limbs of skeletal steel and dull plastics. I stopped, and I stared at that phantom image, seeing myself for the first time in what felt like ages.

And I thought, as I stared through my reflection at those within the parlor, Once ...

Story Seed - Out for Blood

I stepped out of the cab and tossed a cred chip to the driver. "Keep it," I told him, the thing was almost empty anyway, no point in carrying around an empty. As the vehicle moved off I stood and hunched my shoulders, tucking my hands into my pockets and trying to look small and unassuming; it was always best to avoid undue attention here. I took a deep breath, catching the smells of people, trash, pungent spices, and a hard to define mixture of cooking meats and seafoods. My gut gurgled, but I ignored it. I wasn't here to eat.

I started walking, my feet splashing through a thin slime of polluted runoff. I was glad again for the thick rubberized boots. I looked up in time to see a policeman, armor clad, with red-lit optics, at the corner. I took a sudden right, and jaywalked through the human traffic, narrowly dodging a rickshaw. Grimly I wondered just how many other officers were down here this evening.

I didn't have my badge, or my service weapon, and the short barreled, large caliber weapon in my pocket was more than a little illegal. I'd taken it off a small time Spin pusher I'd rolled; considering how much I hated Spin, he'd gotten off easy with a beatdown and having his cash and weapon taken, and his stash dumped into the gutter. The thin synthflesh gloves I had on would cover my prints, and they were almost impossible to detect to boot. Those were a lot illegal, but if they kept my actions anonymous so much the better; it's only a problem if you get caught, right?

I pushed onward through the crowd, just another piece of human flotsam in a sea of the downtrodden.
